Aeneid 2.347-360

Quos ubi confertos audere in proelia vidi,
incipio super his: 'Juvenes, fortissima frustra
pectora, si vobis audentem extrema cupido
certa sequi, quae sit rebus fortuna videtis;
excessere omnes adytis arisque reictis
di quibus imperium hoc steterat; succurritis urbi
incensae: moriamur et in media arma ruamus.
Una salus victis nullam sperare salutem.'
Sic animis juvenum furor additus. Inde, lupi ceu
raptores atra in nebula, quos improba ventris
exegit caecos rabies catulique relicti
faucibus exspectant siccis, per tela, per hostis
vadimus haud dubiam in mortem mediaeque tenemus
urbis iter; nox atra cava circumvolat umbra.

When I saw those who were crowded bold for battle, I began thus:
Young men, bravest in heart in vain, if there is desire in you to follow me venturing to certain death, you will see what fate will be for our situation; all of the gods have abandoned their temples and altars having been relinquished by which this empire had stood; you run to a city aflame: Let us die and let us fall in the middle of battle.
The only safety for the conquered is to expect no safety.' Thus fury was added to the spirit of the young men.
